AB OBJECTIVE: To study in vitro a possible chromosome aberrational role of
HIV. METHODS: A chromosome analysis of two cell systems was carried out:
1) peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL)-uninfected and infected with HIV
from H9/HTLV-IIIB of 5 healthy donors and 2/H9/HTLV-IIIB cells and their
uninfected variant. RESULTS: Altogether 2965 mitoses from PBL and H9
cultures--infected and uninfected--were analysed. No well-expressed
aberrations in infected and uninfected cells but decreased mitotic index
were found. Data suggest cytotoxic elimination of heavily affected
mitoses in the infected cultures which corresponds with improved quality
of chromosome plates. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The exhibited minimal
chromosome aberrational effectivity of HIV is considered as a lysis of
the most impaired and aberrant cells. The substantional difference of
aberrations in vitro to aberrations in homosexuals (G. Manolov et al.,
AIDS Res., 1984, 157) is rendered to opportunistic infections, lifestyle
or to other HIV variants.
